Senator Inouye has helped deliver hundreds of millions of dollars in funding for defense, astronomy, computer science, biotechnology, renewable energy and ocean sciences. Major projects have included the Hawai‘i Renewable Energy Development Venture, the Maui High Performance Computing Center, the Thirty Meter Telescope project on Mauna Kea, the Advanced Solar Telescope, the Center of Excellence for Research in Ocean Sciences, the Women in Technology Project, the Hawai‘i Technology Development Venture, and countless research and development projects with the University of Hawai‘i, the Department of Defense and private industry. As a result, there are today nearly 2,000 high-tech companies in the Islands, over 30,000 individuals working in the science and technology fields, and new career opportunities for a new generation of Islanders.
