Background:

Senator Inouye is the most senior member of the United States Senate.  He serves as chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriations and on June 28, 2010, was named the President pro-tempore of the U.S. Senate, third in the line of succession for the Presidency.

In 1943, Senator Inouye enlisted in the military and served in the 442nd Regimental Combat Team. For his exemplary military valor on the battlefield, Senator Inouye was later awarded the Medal of Honor. 

Senator Inouye’s political career began in 1954 when the people of Hawai`i elected him to the Territorial House of Representatives.  The people of Hawai`i subsequently elected Senator Inouye to the Territorial Senate, and in 1959, elected him the state’s first Congressman.  Senator Inouye has served as a U.S. Senator since 1962.  He is currently serving his 8th term in office.  He continues to provide for the needs, hopes and dreams of the people of Hawai`i.
